Dogs Of War – Song About Mark Antony’s Speech From Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar

June 8, 2014 by Ken Theriot 5 Comments

Mark-Antony-Dogs of WarOne of my favorite songs to perform from my new album – Outlaws and Bystanders – is Dogs of War, which is the story of Mark Antony’s funeral speech (plus a passage from his speech to Caesar’s corpse) from the Shakespeare play, Julius Caesar. It’s packed with emotion as Antony, grieved over the loss of his king, vows revenge on those who committed the murder.

Then he speaks to the crowd at Caesar’s funeral – allowed to do so by the powers that be (the very murderers, themselves) because they feel secure that Antony cannot, even if he tried, stir the crowd to any kind of retaliatory action. But boy-howdy, were THEY wrong. Antony, armed only with words, turns an angry crowd completely around. And he does so without really overtly seeming to call for a revolt. He basically says: “I’m just a guy who is here not to say anything great about Caesar (“I come not to praise Caesar, but to bury him”), because it’s obvious how great a guy he was.” Pretty sly, huh? He goes on, “Oh, you didn’t know? OK, well then let me clue you in about the awesome things this man did for you. Surely if you had really known what an awesome guy he really was (and modest too, apparently), you’d be pretty pissed off that he was murdered by the guys he thought he could trust. Anyone with any honor who had known would want revenge. Oh, you do have honor? And now you know? Wow. Well I’m not good with words (shya! – like saying “unaccustomed as I am to public speaking….”), but if I were the kind of guy who COULD find the right words in a situation like this, then I’d pretty much call for the people to revolt against these bastards!” (“Cry havoc and let slip the dogs of war!”)

Lisa Theriot wrote this song. In the liner notes, she describes the song like this: “we thought we’d borrow from Shakespeare again.  It is the ides of March, and Caesar has been murdered.  His loyal man, Mark Antony, vows to Caesar’s bloody corpse that the killers will pay, but Antony is alone and weaponless. All he has are his words.” Yup. Because everyone knows how ineffective as weapons words can be as weapons;).

Latest Update On The New Album – Outlaws and Bystanders

October 11, 2013 by Ken Theriot Leave a Comment

Hi Everyone. I’m sorry for all the delays on the release of my latest album (yeah, you can call them albums again now, since CDs are going the way of all things), but you can blame my bad medical luck in 2013. I had 3 surgeries and just found out I’m having another one in January of 2014. These are not – I am happy to say – age-related medical issues;). And after the repairs, I will actually be better off than I ever was.

Anyway, progress is being made. Only three songs remain to be recorded after the current one we;re working on – “William Tell” – is in the can.

There is a bit more detail about all this in the post that went up earlier today over at the Raven Boy Music site here – What Is The Status Of Ken Theriot’s New Album?

So think good thoughts and all this new music might just be out before the end of the year. But I’ve learned the folly of making promises on release dates;).

Cheers!

Ken

Delay In Album Release Due To Medical Stuff

March 20, 2013 by Ken Theriot 1 Comment

I just wanted to let everyone know that a thing has come up – fortunately not a life-threatening thing – that caused me to put work on the new album, Outlaws and Bystanders, on the back burner for several weeks. It was due to be released on March 12th, 2013. The new release date is July 30th, 2013.

If you are interested in some details of what kind of medical issue I’m having, you can read about it at a website I started to give out tips to other people dealing with the same thing, since I found there wasn’t a lot of practical information about it when I was looking. The site is http://livingwithacatheter.com/. And more specifically, see this page: What Is A Suprapubic Catheter?

It is possible that I’ll have one of these in for a year or so, which makes me luckier than folks who will have to live like this for the rest of their lives.

But I thought folks might be interested in knowing what all the delay was about.

I’ll be back to recording this week though!

Cheers,

Ken

Recording For New CD Has Begun With Soldier Of God

January 8, 2013 by Ken Theriot Leave a Comment

Ken Theriot Recording GuitarHey everyone! The new album – called Outlaws and Bystanders – will be out in March. This is a hard deadline. It will be ready for a Gulf Wars release concert (at the fabulous Green Dragon Tavern), which will be sometime during the week of March 11-15th.

The picture there on the left is proof that recording has begun:). This is for the song “Soldier of God,” about the warrior priest named Don Geronimo, who was in the service of El Cid – Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar. It’s your basic kill-them-all-let-god-sort-them-out kind of song, but a very inspiring and – dare I say it – rocking one. Don Geronimo says “Mine is the charge to bring men to the Lord by sermon, or psalm, or the point of a sword” – or at least he does in this song;).

Watch (or listen to) this space for news of this song and the rest from the new album.

Cheers!

Recording Your Voice And Sounding Awesome

June 18, 2012 by Ken Theriot Leave a Comment

Yeah, it’s another post on recording over at Home Brew Audio (the new one).  But this one pretty much covers most of my life’s endeavors: music, voice-acting, and showing others show to record stuff.  If you record your voice for any reason that could be considered professional, such as podcasting, narrating videos for your on-line business, conducting webinars, etc., then you should probably take a look and a listen to your current audio.

For example, if you use a headset with the little tiny mic attached, you probably aren’t putting out a very professional sounding audio product.  But the good news is that it won’t cost you very much time or effort to move to a professional level.  You would be really amazed at how much better your voice will sound just by grabbing yourself one of those large USB mics from your local Best Buy store- a Samson C01U is a good example.  I got one a few weeks ago at my BB for $75.
